ChatGPT SEO: what it means and what to do
ChatGPT SEO explained through seven common myths, each checked against OpenAI's documentation and published studies, plus what actually helps.
By Seouch TeamUpdated explainer
ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your pages cited, and your brand described accurately, when ChatGPT answers questions in your market. The term covers two different mechanisms. ChatGPT search reads live web pages at the moment of the question and links to them. The model’s built-in knowledge comes from training data and changes only when a new model ships. Most advice blurs the two, and most myths about ChatGPT SEO come from that blur.
Below are seven claims you will meet when you research how to optimize for ChatGPT, each checked against OpenAI’s own documentation or a published study.
What does ChatGPT SEO actually involve?
ChatGPT SEO involves three things: letting OpenAI’s search crawler reach your pages, ranking well enough in conventional search to be retrieved, and writing pages whose titles and passages answer the specific sub-questions ChatGPT searches for. It is a set of checks layered on generative engine optimization, not a separate channel with its own tricks.
Myth 1: “Blocking GPTBot keeps you out of ChatGPT”
Fact: GPTBot only governs training. OpenAI says “Disallowing GPTBot indicates a site’s content should not be used in training generative AI foundation models”, and that each crawler setting is independent (OpenAI crawler documentation). The crawler that decides whether your pages appear in ChatGPT search answers is OAI-SearchBot. A third agent, ChatGPT-User, fetches pages when a person asks ChatGPT to open them; OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it because the action is user-initiated.
The practical consequence runs both ways. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from answers, and allowing it does not get you cited. If you block OAI-SearchBot by accident, usually through a broad User-agent: * rule or a CDN bot filter, you are out of ChatGPT search entirely.
Myth 2: “ChatGPT SEO replaces Google SEO”
Fact: ChatGPT search depends on conventional search. OpenAI says it uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawler. In a study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts, pages that came through the standard web search channel were cited about 88% of the time, far more than news results or forum threads (Ahrefs, April 2026). Research shows that being in that search pool is the entry ticket.
Google’s position on its own AI features points the same way. Google says “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO” (Google Search Central). That statement is about Google, not ChatGPT, but the overlap in practice is large.
Myth 3: “Schema markup gets you cited by ChatGPT”
Fact: the best available test found no lift. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD and compared them with 4,000 matched pages that did not. On ChatGPT, citations moved by +2.2% relative to the control group, a change the authors could not distinguish from zero (Ahrefs, May 2026). Their headline: “Adding schema didn’t boost citations on any platform.”
Research shows, with limits the authors state themselves: every page in the study was already heavily cited, the window was 30 days, and all schema types were grouped together. Structured data remains useful for rich results and for making your organization unambiguous. It is not a citation lever.
Myth 4: “An llms.txt file tells ChatGPT what to read”
Fact: there is no evidence ChatGPT search uses it. OpenAI’s crawler documentation describes OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and robots.txt; it does not mention llms.txt. Google says llms.txt files are not needed for its search and will not help or harm visibility there.
Our view: publishing an llms.txt file costs little and may help tools that read it, such as coding assistants. Do not count it as ChatGPT SEO. The llms.txt guide covers who reads the file and the llms.txt generator builds one if you want it anyway.
Myth 5: “Posting on Reddit is the fastest way into ChatGPT”
Fact: ChatGPT reads Reddit far more than it credits it. In the same Ahrefs dataset, Reddit threads made up about 68% of the URLs ChatGPT retrieved but did not cite, and Reddit’s citation rate was 1.93%. The authors’ summary: ChatGPT “learns from the crowd, then cites another institution.”
Research shows that Reddit shapes the context of answers without earning the link. If community discussion of your product is negative or wrong, that can still colour how ChatGPT describes you, so it is worth monitoring. As a route to citations, it is weak.
Myth 6: “ChatGPT only cites brand-new content”
Fact: relevance outweighs recency. In the Ahrefs data, cited pages from the search channel had a median age of about 500 days, and some were more than seven years old. The authors’ conclusion: “Relevance still does the heavy lifting.”
That does not make freshness irrelevant. For topics that change, such as prices, regulations and software versions, an outdated page is a less useful answer, and our view is that keeping such pages current matters more than how recently they were first published. Changing the date without changing the content achieves nothing.
Myth 7: “You cannot measure ChatGPT visibility”
Fact: you can measure it, just not directly. Three methods work together:
- A fixed prompt set. Twenty to thirty prompts your buyers use, run monthly, recording whether you are cited, mentioned without a link, or absent.
- Referral data. ChatGPT usually tags outbound links with
utm_source=chatgpt.com, so clicks appear as their own source in analytics. - Tracking tools. Several platforms run prompts at scale and report citation share over time. Our roundup of answer engine optimization tools compares them, including free options.
Answers vary from run to run, so trend lines across many prompts are meaningful and single screenshots are not.
What helps instead
Strip away the myths and ChatGPT SEO reduces to a short list:
- Access. OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and not blocked at the CDN. The AI visibility checker tests both.
- Eligibility. Indexable pages with server-rendered text that rank in conventional search.
- Coverage of sub-questions. ChatGPT searches for narrower queries than the prompt. Titles and sections that state those specific topics are matched more often. The step-by-step version is in how to get cited by ChatGPT.
- Quotable passages. A direct answer under each question heading, with sourced numbers and named experts.
- Presence in third-party sources. The review sites, comparisons and documentation ChatGPT cites for your category.
What to do next
Check access first, because Myth 1 is the most common real-world failure and the quickest fix. Then build a 20-prompt baseline before changing any content, so you can tell whether your changes moved anything. When you plan content, start from the sub-questions your buyers ask rather than from AI-specific tactics: the evidence points to relevance, not markup, as what gets pages cited.
Frequently asked questions
- What is ChatGPT SEO?
- ChatGPT SEO is the work of making your pages eligible, retrievable and citable in ChatGPT's search answers, and of shaping how your brand is described in them. In practice it is conventional SEO plus a few ChatGPT-specific checks, mainly crawler access for OAI-SearchBot and coverage of the narrower questions ChatGPT searches for.
- Can I optimize for ChatGPT without hurting my Google rankings?
- Yes. The things that help in ChatGPT, such as indexable pages, clear answers, accurate titles and sourced claims, are the same things Google rewards. Avoid tactics aimed only at AI systems, such as mass-producing near-duplicate pages for every query variation, which Google treats as scaled content abuse.
- Does ChatGPT use Google's index?
- OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content from partners, and it runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. It has not published the full list of providers. Ranking well in conventional search engines still improves your chance of being retrieved.
- How often does ChatGPT update what it knows about my site?
- There are two timelines. ChatGPT search reads live pages, and OpenAI says robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot apply in about 24 hours. What the model knows without searching comes from training data, which only changes when a new model is trained.
