Why mentions are back in focus

Classic SEO treated an unlinked mention mainly as a chance to ask for a link. AI answers changed that. Language models learn how brands are discussed, and AI search systems retrieve pages that compare and recommend products, so the mention itself can shape what an assistant says, with or without a link.

Research shows that in an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated more strongly with visibility in Google’s AI Overviews than backlinks did. That is a correlation: well-known brands collect both mentions and visibility, and the study does not show that adding mentions causes citations.

Google says chasing inauthentic mentions across the web is not as helpful as it might seem, because its AI features rely on the same ranking and spam systems as Search (Google Search Central).

Finding your mentions

  • Search for your brand name while excluding your own domain, and repeat for product and founder names.
  • Check the review platforms, forums and communities your customers use.
  • Look at which sources AI assistants cite when they answer questions in your category; those are the mentions that count most.

Earning more of them

  • Publish original data or research that others want to quote.
  • Offer expert commentary to journalists and newsletter writers in your field.
  • Build something useful, such as a free tool, template or calculator.
  • Make it easy to describe you accurately: a clear one-line description and a press page.

Mentions and links overlap but are not the same. The backlink checker covers the linked part; the AI visibility checker shows how assistants talk about you.
