llms-full.txt

Definition: llms-full.txt is a companion file to llms.txt that contains the full text of a site's key pages, usually documentation, concatenated into one Markdown file so an AI tool can load everything in a single request.

Also called: llms full txt

Updated

How it differs from llms.txt

llms.txt is a table of contents: a summary and a list of links. llms-full.txt is the whole book, with the content of those pages pasted into one long Markdown file. A tool that reads llms.txt still has to fetch each linked page; a tool that reads llms-full.txt gets everything at once.

The file is not part of the original llms.txt proposal. It spread as a convention through hosted documentation platforms, which generate it automatically from the docs they host, and many developer documentation sites now publish one.

Who it is for

The audience is narrow: coding assistants, IDE agents and developers who paste documentation into a chat. For them, one file with every page of an API reference is genuinely convenient.

For most marketing sites, shops and blogs there is no evidence of benefit. Google says Google Search ignores AI text files such as these (Google Search Central), and no AI search provider has said it uses them to pick citations.

If you publish one

  • Generate it at build time from the same source as your pages, so it never drifts out of date.
  • Include reference content only. Leave out navigation, marketing pages and duplicated text.
  • Watch the size. A large documentation site can produce a file that exceeds the context window of the tools meant to read it; split it by product or version if needed.
  • Link to it from llms.txt so tools can find it.

The llms.txt guide compares both files with examples, and the llms.txt generator handles the summary file.
