AI Mode
Definition: AI Mode is Google Search's conversational, AI-first results mode, where Gemini answers a query in depth, accepts follow-up questions and links to supporting web pages instead of showing a classic list of results.
Also called: Google AI Mode

A short timeline
Google began testing AI Mode with Search Labs users in March 2025 and started rolling it out to everyone in the US at Google I/O in May 2025, without a Labs sign-up. It has since expanded to more countries and languages. AI Mode sits in its own tab: instead of ten blue links, you get a long generated answer with source links and a box for follow-up questions.
AI Mode and AI Overviews compared
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above classic results on some queries | Separate mode or tab |
| Interaction | One answer | Conversation with follow-ups |
| Retrieval | Google index, may use query fan-out | Google index, may use query fan-out |
| Crawler | Normal Googlebot | Normal Googlebot |
| Controls | nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex |

Google says both features may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and that there are no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (AI features and your website). Traffic from AI Mode is included in Search Console’s Web search type.
What it changes for your site
Because one question becomes many searches, a page can earn a link in AI Mode for a narrow sub-question it answers well. Pages that cover a topic’s practical sub-questions, such as constraints, comparisons and costs, give the system more to work with than pages written around one head keyword.
Our view: the clicks AI Mode sends are fewer but tend to come later in a decision. Measure assisted conversions, not only sessions. The post on query fan-out shows how to map the sub-questions for a topic, and the AI visibility guide covers tracking where you appear.
