Query fan-out

Definition: Query fan-out is a technique AI search systems use to split one question into many related sub-queries, run those searches in parallel and combine the results into a single generated answer.

Also called: fan-out queries, query expansion

Updated

An example

Ask Google’s AI Mode for “trail running shoes for wide feet under $150”. Rather than running that exact phrase once, the system may issue separate searches for wide-fit trail shoe models, current prices, fit advice from podiatrists and recent reviews, then assemble one answer from the best passages across all of them.

Google says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use this technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response (AI features and your website). Other assistants that search the web, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, work in a broadly similar way, although they do not document the details.

Why it matters for your content

Your page can be cited for one of the sub-queries even if it never ranked for the original question. A buying guide with a clear section on wide-fit sizing, or a comparison table with current prices, gives the system passages it can use. A page that only repeats the head keyword gives it nothing specific.

Practical consequences:

  • Cover the sub-questions people actually ask about a topic inside your strongest pages.
  • Make each section answer its own question, so it still makes sense when quoted alone.
  • Keep facts that change, such as prices and availability, current and dated.

The trap to avoid

It is tempting to publish one page per sub-query. Google says creating pages for every fan-out variation to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy (Google Search Central). Depth within a good page beats a swarm of thin ones. The post on query fan-out walks through mapping sub-questions for a topic, and the GEO guide puts the technique in context.
