AEO vs SEO: What Changes, Page by Page

AEO vs SEO compared through three page types: a local service page, a SaaS docs page and a publisher article, plus a side-by-side table, measurement and AEO vs GEO.

The short answer

SEO gets a page into the list; AEO gets a passage from that page shown, spoken or quoted as the answer. The page still has to be crawled, indexed and trusted, so the foundations are shared. What changes is the shape of the content, which queries you chase, what counts as success, and how you measure it.

The abstract comparison is easy to nod along to and hard to apply, so this guide works through three page types you probably own or compete against: a local service page, a software documentation page and a publisher’s explainer. For each, it lists what SEO asks of the page, what AEO asks, and where they overlap. The side-by-side table and the measurement section follow. If you want the definition and a full checklist first, start with what is answer engine optimization.

Scenario 1: a local service page

Imagine an emergency plumber’s page for one city. Under SEO it competes for “emergency plumber” plus the city name. Under AEO it competes for the questions a stressed homeowner asks a phone or a chat assistant at 11pm: how much it costs, whether anyone covers their neighborhood tonight, and what to do before the plumber arrives.

What SEO asks of this page

  • A title and H1 carrying the service and the location, with a description that reads well in a result.
  • Consistent name, address and phone number here, on Google Business Profile, on Bing Places and across directories.
  • Reviews, local links and a page that loads quickly on a phone. The local SEO audit checklist covers the full list.
  • LocalBusiness structured data that matches the visible details, validated with the schema markup validator.

What AEO asks in addition

  • A section headed with the question, “How much does an emergency plumber cost in [city]?”, followed by a direct answer in roughly 40 to 60 words that states a call-out fee and an hourly range, dated. “Competitive pricing” cannot be extracted; “A call-out between 6pm and 8am is $150, then $95 per hour, as of November 2026” can.
  • Opening hours, service area and response time as text on the page, not only in a map embed, an image or the business profile. Microsoft’s guidance on AI answers warns that systems “may not render hidden content” and asks for critical details in HTML.
  • A short table of common jobs with typical prices and times, because tables are the format both Google and Bing name for extraction.
  • A visible FAQ with the four or five questions customers actually phone about. The markup is optional now; Google says FAQ rich results stopped appearing for all sites on May 7, 2026. The visible answers still matter.
  • Bing Places kept current. Bing’s AI Performance announcement specifically tells local businesses to register so address, hours and contact details stay accurate in Copilot answers.

Where they overlap

Everything that makes the page trustworthy serves both: consistent details, real reviews, fast loading, no blocked crawlers. The AEO additions are rewrites, not a new page. The main difference is the willingness to publish a number.

Scenario 2: a SaaS documentation page

Now a documentation page explaining how to rotate an API key. Under SEO this page competes for product-specific queries that are often uncontested; its enemies are the documentation platform’s rendering and its own duplication across versions. Under AEO its users are developers asking an assistant “how do I rotate an API key in [product]” and expecting the exact steps, which is a question AI tools now answer directly from documentation.

What SEO asks of this page

  • Server-rendered HTML. Many documentation platforms ship content through client-side JavaScript; Google renders it eventually, but with delays, and other engines may not render it at all.
  • A canonical URL per topic, with older versions either consolidated or clearly marked, so the index does not hold five near-duplicates.
  • A descriptive title that includes the product name, because the query always does.
  • Internal links from related tasks and from the product’s marketing pages.

What AEO asks in addition

  • The task as a question heading and the steps as a numbered list. “Rotating keys” becomes “How do I rotate an API key?” followed by one sentence stating where the setting lives, then the numbered steps.
  • Operating-system or language variants rendered in the HTML rather than in tabs that load on click. Tabs are the most common place documentation hides the answer; Microsoft’s guidance is blunt about it: “Don’t hide important answers in tabs or expandable menus.”
  • Exact error strings as text, each followed by a one-sentence cause and fix. “Error 401: invalid signature” with the sentence under it is a passage an assistant can quote; a screenshot of the error is not.
  • One-sentence definitions for every named concept (“A signing key is…”) so that definition-style questions have something to lift.
  • A visible last-updated date tied to the product version. Bing’s search team notes that stale facts produce wrong answers; for documentation, a stale fact is a support ticket.

Where they overlap

Rendering and canonicalization decide whether the page can be retrieved at all, which is a precondition for both. Our view: for documentation, AEO is the higher-value half, because the user is not browsing a list of ten competing docs sites; they are asking one question and taking the first clean answer. If that answer comes from a third-party tutorial because your docs hid the steps in a tab, you have lost control of your own product’s instructions.

Scenario 3: a publisher’s explainer article

Finally, an explainer on a publisher site, say an article on how fixed-rate mortgages work. Under SEO it competes on topical authority, expertise signals and links, and the goal is the visit. Under AEO it competes to be the extracted paragraph, and the extracted paragraph may be all the user reads.

What SEO asks of this page

  • Depth and accuracy, a named author with credentials, and a publication with E-E-A-T signals.
  • Links from other publishers and from within the site’s own topic cluster.
  • Freshness where facts change, and a clear structure for a long read.

What AEO asks in addition

  • Question-led sections, each opening with the direct answer, for the questions that have featured snippets or People Also Ask boxes today.
  • Specific, sourced figures rather than general statements, with links to primary sources.
  • A decision about which passages to give away. Google’s controls (nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet) remove text from featured snippets, and Google’s robots meta documentation says the first two also limit use “as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode”. Bing’s data-nosnippet excludes text from “snippets and AI summaries”. A publisher can mark proprietary analysis out of the answer and leave the definitions in.
  • Something on the page the answer cannot carry: a calculator, original data, an expert interview, a comparison table that changes monthly. Google says AI search rewards “non-commodity content”, in its May 2025 guidance.

Where they conflict

This is the one scenario where the two can pull apart. Research shows (Ahrefs, February 2026) a 58 percent lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview is present, measured on desktop against a forecast baseline; Pew Research Center’s 2025 panel study found users clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits with an AI summary versus 15 percent without. Google says the clicks that remain “are higher quality”. The methods differ and so do the numbers, but no study shows the explainer click-through rate rising. The publisher’s AEO question is therefore not “how do I win the snippet” but “which questions do I want to answer in full, and what do I keep for the visit”.

AEO vs SEO side by side

Dimension SEO AEO
Goal Rank in the list and earn the click Be the passage shown, spoken or quoted
Unit of success Position for a query Ownership of the answer for a question
Queries Head terms and their long tail Questions, in the words people type or say
Page structure Topic coverage, hierarchy, internal links Question-led headings, direct answer first, one question per section
Ideal length Whatever completeness needs The same page; each answer 40 to 60 words before the detail
Formats Prose, media, links Tables for comparisons, numbered lists for processes, one-sentence definitions
Hidden content Tolerated if Google renders it Treated as absent
Specificity Helpful Required; numbers, names and dates are what gets extracted
Structured data Rich results Must match visible text; no rich-result payoff for FAQ or HowTo since 2026 and 2023
Controls Robots and canonical Also nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet, which now govern AI use too
Off-site Links Links plus consistency of facts across third-party pages
Main risk Losing rank Answering so well nobody visits

How measurement differs

SEO measurement is mature: rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions by query and page. AEO measurement is inferred. Google does not label featured snippets or voice results in Search Console, and the AI engines other than Google and Bing report nothing to publishers. The workable AEO metrics are question-query impressions, click-through-rate patterns, Bing citations and a prompt panel.

Question SEO answer AEO answer
Am I visible? Rank and impressions per query in Search Console Impressions on question-style queries; the June 2026 generative AI report for AI Overviews and AI Mode pages (impressions only)
Did I win? Clicks and position Position one with high impressions and a falling click-through rate usually means you hold the answer; the prompt panel confirms it for AI engines
What was asked? The query report Bing’s AI Performance report shows a sample of grounding queries per cited page; Google shows nothing at this level
What did it earn? Sessions and conversions Conversions from question-query and AI-referral sessions, plus assisted outcomes such as calls and support deflection
How do I compare? Rank trackers Bing Citation Share per grounding query; share of voice from your own panel

Our view: report AEO beside SEO rather than inside it. A page that gains the answer slot and loses clicks has succeeded at one and declined at the other, and a blended number hides both. The AI visibility checker covers the readiness side, from bot access to snippet eligibility and extractable text, for a single URL; the outcome side is the two reports and your panel.

AEO vs GEO

AEO and generative engine optimization are often used interchangeably, and they do overlap, but the target is different. AEO is about one passage: the snippet, the spoken result, or the direct-answer sentence an AI puts first. GEO is about being among the sources an AI cites anywhere in a multi-source answer, whether or not your sentence is the lead.

That difference shows up in three places.

  1. Surface. AEO’s historical home is Google’s featured snippets and People Also Ask, where Google says “you can’t” mark a page as the answer; its systems “determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet”, per the featured snippets documentation. GEO’s home is AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, where a response may cite five or ten sources.
  2. Content emphasis. AEO is structure: the question, the direct answer, the table. GEO adds the KDD 2024 benchmark’s findings that quotations, statistics and citations raise a source’s share of a generated answer, and the off-site mention work that correlates with AI visibility.
  3. Measurement. AEO can still be inferred from Search Console patterns. GEO needs citation data, which only Bing reports in detail, and a panel for everything else.

If your pages already pass the AEO checklist, most of GEO is done. The remaining work is the evidence density on the page and the mentions off it, which the GEO vs SEO comparison covers.

Which should you prioritize?

Prioritize SEO until a page is indexed and ranking for question-style queries, because an answer engine cannot extract from a page it has not retrieved. Then prioritize AEO on the pages that already rank, since the changes are rewrites that cost little and the answer slot is where those queries are decided.

A simple rule by page type: local service pages should make the AEO edits immediately, because customers ask assistants for prices and availability and the page can answer; documentation should treat AEO as the primary goal, because the user wants one answer, not a list; publishers should decide section by section, giving away definitions and keeping analysis, tools and original data for the visit.

What to do next

Choose one page from each category you own and rewrite it to the scenario above: question headings, direct answers, tables, nothing in tabs, numbers with dates. Run the free SEO audit on each to confirm the technical foundations and snippet eligibility have not regressed. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report and a 20-question prompt panel, and compare question-query impressions and click-through rate six weeks later. For the full item-by-item checklist, use the answer engine optimization guide; for the multi-engine citation work beyond the single answer, continue to the AI visibility tutorial.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO in one sentence?
SEO earns a position in a list of results; AEO earns the single passage that is shown, spoken or quoted as the answer. The page work overlaps heavily, the goal and the measurement do not.
Can a page be optimized for both AEO and SEO?
Yes, and most should be. A page that ranks has already passed retrieval; adding question-led headings with a direct answer under each, tables for comparisons and specific sourced facts makes the same page eligible for the answer slot without hurting its ranking.
Does AEO reduce my traffic?
It can on commodity questions, where the extracted answer satisfies the user. Studies disagree on how much; Ahrefs measured a 58 percent lower position-one click-through rate with an AI Overview present, Pew found roughly half the click rate, and Google says the remaining clicks are higher quality. The response is to put something on the page the answer cannot carry.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO targets one extracted answer: a snippet, a spoken result, or the direct-answer line inside an AI response. GEO targets being cited anywhere within a generated answer built from several sources. AEO is about the passage; GEO is about the source.
Which should a small site prioritize, AEO or SEO?
SEO first, because an answer engine can only extract from pages it has retrieved. Once pages are indexed and ranking for question-style queries, AEO changes are mostly rewrites of existing pages and cost little.
