AEO in plain terms
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a page so that a search engine, a voice assistant or an AI system can lift a passage from it and present that passage as the answer to a question. The unit of success is not a ranking position but the extracted answer: a featured snippet, a People Also Ask entry, a spoken result, or the direct-answer sentence inside an AI response.
The term predates the current AI wave. It grew up around featured snippets and voice search, and it has been stretched to cover AI answers because the underlying skill is the same: write a self-contained answer under a clear question, back it with evidence, and make sure the machine can read it. This guide is built around a checklist you can test against any page. Before that, the acronym needs clearing up, because it is one of the most ambiguous in marketing.
Which AEO? The acronym clash
Three unrelated things share the letters. In customs and international trade, AEO is Authorized Economic Operator, a trusted-trader status defined in the World Customs Organization’s SAFE Framework of Standards and adopted by customs authorities worldwide. On the New York Stock Exchange, AEO is the ticker symbol of American Eagle Outfitters. In search marketing, AEO is answer engine optimization.
This matters for two practical reasons. Search volume estimates for “AEO” are polluted by the other two meanings, so any keyword tool number for the bare acronym overstates marketing interest; use the full phrase when you research. And if you write about AEO, say “answer engine optimization” in the title, the first sentence and the page’s meta description, so that the engines you are optimizing for can tell which AEO you mean. Our meta tag checker shows how the title and description will read in a result.
How did we get from featured snippets to AI answers?
Answer engines are older than generative AI. Google has shown a direct answer above the results since the mid-2010s, voice assistants started reading those answers aloud, and AI Overviews, AI Mode and chat assistants extended the same idea to multi-sentence answers assembled from several sources. The optimization target changed shape each time; the extraction logic did not.
| When | What changed | What it meant for AEO |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Google’s Danny Sullivan reintroduced featured snippets, calling them “especially helpful for those on mobile or searching by voice” and noting that spoken results cite the source page | The extracted paragraph became the target; voice made the single answer the only answer |
| August to September 2023 | Google says HowTo rich results were removed, and FAQ rich results were limited to “well-known, authoritative government and health websites” | The schema-led version of AEO lost most of its payoff |
| May 2024 | AI Overviews launched in the US, with AI Mode following from March 2025 | The answer became a generated paragraph that quotes several pages |
| October 2025 | Bing added data-nosnippet, with marked content “excluded from snippets and AI summaries” |
Snippet controls became AI controls at both engines |
| February 2026 | Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report entered public preview, showing citations and grounding queries | The first publisher-side measurement of AI answers |
| May 7, 2026 | Google says FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search for all sites, per the documentation updates log | FAQ markup is now optional; the visible FAQ still matters |
| June 2026 | Search Console added generative AI performance reports showing impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google-side visibility, without clicks or queries |
The lesson from the timeline: every AEO tactic tied to a specific markup eventually lost its surface, and every tactic tied to writing a clear, extractable answer survived.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO: where does AEO sit?
AEO targets the single extracted answer. GEO targets inclusion and citation across a generated answer that blends several sources. SEO targets ranking in a list. They share the foundation of crawlable, indexed, well-written pages; they differ in the unit you are optimizing for and in what you can measure.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target | Position in a list | The one passage shown or spoken as the answer | A citation inside a multi-source answer |
| Surfaces | Organic results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice, the direct-answer line in an AI response | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude |
| Page structure | Topic coverage and relevance | Question-led headings with a direct answer under each | The same, plus quotable facts, statistics and sources throughout |
| Measurement | Rankings and clicks | Question-query impressions, snippet ownership | Citation counts, share of voice, AI referrals |
| Core risk | Losing rank | The answer is so complete that nobody clicks | Being summarized without attribution |

How do answer engines pull a passage?
An answer engine retrieves candidate pages for the question, splits each page into passages, scores the passages for how directly and completely they answer, and shows or quotes the best one with attribution. You cannot nominate a passage; you can only make yours the easiest to extract, the most direct, and the best supported.
Google says site owners cannot mark a page as a featured snippet: “You can’t.” Google’s systems “determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a user’s search request”, per the featured snippets documentation. The same documentation lists the controls that remove you: nosnippet blocks both featured and regular snippets, data-nosnippet keeps marked text out of them, and a low max-snippet value can leave too little text for a featured snippet to form. Google’s robots meta documentation adds that nosnippet and max-snippet also limit what can be used “as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode”. The passage-level scoring that powers this is what passage ranking refers to.
Microsoft is the engine that has written down what it wants from a passage. Krishna Madhavan’s guidance on inclusion in AI search answers (October 2025) describes headings as working “like chapter titles that define clear content slices”, asks for concise answers of one to two sentences that directly address a question, and for self-contained phrasing so that sentences “make sense even when pulled out of context”. It is also explicit about hidden content: “Don’t hide important answers in tabs or expandable menus”, because AI systems “may not render hidden content”, and critical details inside images should be repeated as alt text or HTML. Bing’s own AI Performance announcement adds that “clear headings, tables, and FAQ sections help surface key information” and that “examples, data, and cited sources help build trust when content is reused”.
Our view: these two sets of documentation agree on the mechanism. The engine is looking for a passage that answers the question on its own, under a heading that says what question it answers, in HTML it can read without clicking, with enough specificity to be trusted. Everything in the checklist below follows from that.
The AEO checklist
Each item has a test you can run on a live page. Work through the groups in order; the first two are where most pages fail.
Structure
- The page targets questions people ask. Test: paste your heading into Google and look for a People Also Ask box or featured snippet. If neither appears for any heading, the page is not competing for an answer slot. Use People Also Ask boxes and Search Console’s query report to find the real wording.
- Question-intent sections use question-led H2s. Test: read only the H2s. Each should be a question a user would type or say, or a label so specific it implies one. “Pricing” fails; “How much does a site audit cost?” passes.
- One question per section. Test: if a section answers two questions, a passage extractor has to choose and may take neither. Split it.
- The answer comes first. Test: read the first sentence under each question heading. It must answer the question without the reader needing anything above it. Context and caveats follow, never lead.
- The direct answer is 40 to 60 words. Test: count. Long enough to be complete, short enough to be lifted whole. Microsoft’s description of a concise answer is one to two sentences; Google’s featured snippets are a short paragraph, a list or a table.
Format
- Comparisons are tables, processes are numbered lists. Test: look for any paragraph that compares three or more things or describes a sequence; convert it. Tables and ordered lists are the formats both Google and Bing name.
- Each table cell is self-contained. Test: read a single cell in isolation. “Yes” fails; “Yes, honors robots.txt” passes, because a cell can be quoted without its header row.
- Key terms are defined once, in one sentence. Test: search the page for “is” after the term. A sentence of the form “X is Y” is what definition answers are built from.
- Nothing important is hidden. Test: disable JavaScript and reload; then view the page source and search for the answer text. If it is inside a tab, accordion or “read more” that only renders on click, move it or render it in the initial HTML. Microsoft says AI systems “may not render hidden content”.
- Critical facts in images are repeated as text. Test: for every chart or screenshot that carries a fact, find that fact in a sentence or table nearby.
Evidence and entities
- Claims carry numbers, names and dates. Test: find each adjective doing the work of a fact (“fast”, “popular”, “most”) and replace it with the measurement, the source and the date. The KDD 2024 GEO benchmark found that adding statistics and quotations raised a source’s share of generated answers; keyword repetition lowered it.
- Sources are linked, and primary. Test: every statistic links to where it came from, and that page is the original (a study, documentation, a dataset), not another blog quoting it.
- Author and organization are visible and consistent. Test: the page names who wrote it and who published it, and that name matches your About page, your profiles and third-party listings. Answer engines attribute; make attribution easy and the entity unambiguous.
- Dates are real. Test: a visible “Updated” date that changes only when content changes. Bing’s search team says stale facts produce wrong answers; an engine that doubts your date has a reason to prefer another source.
Markup and technical
- Structured data matches the visible text exactly. Test: run the page through the schema markup validator and compare each property with what a reader sees. Google says to “make sure that all the content in your markup is also visible on your web page”, in its May 2025 guidance. Do not add FAQ or HowTo markup expecting rich results; those ended in May 2026 and 2023 respectively.
- The page is indexable and snippet-eligible. Test: URL Inspection in Search Console shows it indexed; the source contains no
noindex, nosnippetor restrictivemax-snippetyou did not intend. A page that cannot show a snippet cannot be an answer. - The title, H1 and description agree. Test: all three describe the same question or topic in natural language. Microsoft treats them as the primary signals of a page’s purpose and scope.
- The answer engines’ bots are allowed. Test: robots.txt allows Googlebot, bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Blocking the training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) is a separate decision and does not affect answers.
- The page loads fast and reads cleanly on mobile. Test: Core Web Vitals pass in the field; main content is clearly separated from navigation and promotions. Google lists page experience among its recommendations for AI features, and voice results are overwhelmingly mobile.
Off-page
- Your answer is consistent with how others describe you. Test: search your brand plus the question. If third-party pages contradict your facts (price, founding year, feature list), fix the sources you can and update the rest.
- You are mentioned where the question is discussed. Test: search the question plus “reddit”, plus “forum”, plus the leading industry publication. Absence there is absence from the sources answer engines weigh.

How do you measure answer engine optimization?
Measure AEO through question-style queries in Search Console, where a position-one result with high impressions and a falling click-through rate usually means you hold the answer; through Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report for Copilot citations; and through a repeatable prompt panel for the engines that report nothing to publishers.
Three things make AEO measurement awkward.
- Google does not label featured snippets in Search Console. A featured snippet reports as position one in the Performance report, with no search-appearance filter. The workable proxy: filter queries to those starting with “what”, “how”, “why”, “which”, “can”, “does” and “is”, sort by impressions, and watch pages whose click-through rate falls while impressions hold. That pattern is a snippet you own, or an AI Overview above you. Since June 2026, the generative AI performance report tells you which pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but shows impressions only.
- Bing reports citations but not traffic. The AI Performance report shows total citations, cited pages and a sample of the grounding queries that retrieved your content, and since June 2026 a Citation Share for each grounding query. Microsoft is clear that this is not clicks or engagement. It is still the only place to see the question an AI actually asked your page.
- ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude report nothing. For these, build a panel: 20 to 50 questions in the customer’s words, run on the same day each month, with the cited domain and the exact answer sentence recorded. Over time this gives you an answer-ownership rate per engine, the AEO equivalent of a rank. The AI visibility checker covers the readiness side for a single URL, from bot access to extractable text.
Report AEO as three numbers: question-query impressions, answer-ownership rate from the panel, and conversions from AI and question-query sessions. Clicks alone will undercount a channel whose job is to answer before the click.
AEO tools: free versus paid
You can run the whole checklist with free tools. Paid tools add scale, automation and competitor views. Nothing here guarantees an answer slot, because, as Google puts it, you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet.
| Need | Free | Paid |
|---|---|---|
| Find the questions | Google’s People Also Ask boxes, Search Console query report, Bing Webmaster Tools keyword research | Keyword tools with question filters and SERP-feature filters (Semrush, Ahrefs, AlsoAsked) |
| Check structure, titles and snippet controls | Our meta tag checker and free SEO audit; browser view-source with JavaScript disabled | Site crawlers with custom extraction (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb) |
| Validate markup | Our schema markup validator; Google’s Rich Results Test | Schema management platforms |
| See AI citations | Search Console generative AI report; Bing AI Performance report | AI visibility trackers that run prompt panels automatically (Profound, Peec, Semrush AI toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar) |
| Check AI readiness of a page | Our AI visibility checker (bot access, indexability, snippet eligibility, extractable text) | The same trackers, with mention monitoring across engines |
| Measure outcomes | GA4 with a custom channel for AI referrers | Attribution platforms |
Our view: start free. The panel is a spreadsheet, the structural tests are a browser, and the two publisher reports cost nothing. Pay for a tracker when the panel outgrows one person’s afternoon, or when you need competitor share of voice at scale. Our neutral comparison is in answer engine optimization tools.
What to do next
Pick the five pages that already rank on page one for question-style queries and run the checklist on each; they are the pages closest to an answer slot. Fix structure first (question-led headings, direct answer first, 40 to 60 words), then format (tables, lists, nothing hidden), then evidence (numbers, sources, dates). Confirm the technical items with the free audit, set up the Bing AI Performance report and a prompt panel, and recheck in six weeks. If you are deciding how AEO fits alongside your existing search work, read AEO vs SEO; if the goal is citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews rather than the single answer, the AI visibility guide is the next step.
Frequently asked questions
- What does AEO stand for in marketing?
- Answer engine optimization: structuring content so that a search engine, voice assistant or AI system can extract and present it as the direct answer to a question. In customs and trade, AEO means Authorized Economic Operator, and on the New York Stock Exchange it is American Eagle Outfitters' ticker. Check the context before you search.
- Is AEO the same as GEO?
- No, though they overlap. AEO targets the single extracted answer: a featured snippet, a People Also Ask entry, a spoken result, or the direct-answer passage inside an AI response. GEO targets inclusion and citation across a multi-source generated answer. The on-page work is similar; the goal and measurement differ.
- Does FAQ schema still help with AEO?
- Not for rich results. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for all sites on May 7, 2026, and HowTo rich results ended in 2023. A visible FAQ section can still earn People Also Ask placements and gives AI systems clean question-and-answer pairs; the markup is optional.
- How long should an AEO answer be?
- Lead each question heading with a direct answer of roughly 40 to 60 words, then expand. Microsoft's guidance describes concise answers as one to two sentences that directly address the question; Google's featured snippets are typically a short paragraph, a list or a table.
- How do I measure answer engine optimization?
- Track question-style queries in Search Console and watch for position-one impressions with falling clicks, which usually means you hold the snippet. Use Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot citations, and a repeatable prompt panel for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode.
